Cycle-Smart Cyclocross Weekend Results
The ECCC wrapped up its third weekend of the year with a sunny weekend up in Massachusetts for the Cycle-Smart Invitational. A large contingent of New England teams contested the event along with perennial long distance traveler Rutgers showing up with a small group of riders. Full results can be found at the calendar page but a brief recap is below.
In Saturday’s event, Peter Hagerty of RIT was able to capitalize on Patrick Bradley racing for his USAC Elite team and was able to claim top honors in the Men’s A event. It was a close race between Peter and Michael Rea of UVM throughout the race, but Peter was able to hold off Michael for the win. On Sunday, newcomer Jeff Bahnson was able to storm the course and took an impressive victory after having only registered his college as a collegiate team this past week. Thanks to his second place on the second day, Peter Hagerty was able to add to his overall points total and has a commanding lead over the rest of the Men’s field.
In the women’s event, MIT brought along some of their dominate women from the road season and were are able to take top honors both days. Laura Ralston was able to claim top honors on Saturday over her teammate Christina Birch in a tightly contested race. In Sunday’s event, Christina was able to top the podium after a strong performance throughout the race. The Women’s overall remains tight with Jess Kutz of PSU and Casey Kelly of RIT still tied at the top but Christina is close behind.
The overall team race remains close with Rutgers and RIT still in the lead of DI and DII respectively, although Rutgers leads all Divisions. After UVM and MIT won the Cycle-Smart Invitational for their respective divisions, the overall battle has tightened up and will depend on which teams are able to travel to New York to race the next couple of weekends.
